
Let’s Talk About 20mm Carbon Fiber Tubing
When you’re picking out a 20mm carbon fiber tube, you’re basically playing a game of balance. You have to decide how much wall thickness you can live with versus how much stiffness you actually need. We make these using high-modulus fibers and epoxy resins. Why 20mm? Because it gives you a rock-solid footprint. If you used aluminum here, you’d probably see too much flex. Steel? Too heavy. This is the sweet spot. The strength side of things Here’s the thing about the 20mm diameter: it’s great at resisting deflection. Because of how we roll-wrap or pultrude the fibers, they stay aligned perfectly. That means when you put the tube under pressure, it doesn’t just buckle and give up. It’s light. Really light. But it’s way stronger than the standard 6061-T6 aluminum you’re used to. The “Gotchas” Now, carbon fiber isn’t magic. It’s stiff, yeah, but it’s also brittle. Unlike a metal pipe that might dent or bend if you mess up, these tubes will just crack or shatter if you push them past their limit. There’s no “warning bend.” And a quick heads-up on the chemistry: watch out for galvanic corrosion. If you bolt these directly to aluminum fittings without a little shim or some insulation in between, the carbon will actually eat through the aluminum over time. Not a great look. Putting it to work We mostly see these popping up in robotic arms, camera gimbals, or high-end industrial frames. Since 20mm is a pretty standard size, you can just grab off-the-shelf clamps and end-caps without having to custom-machine everything. Plus, they don’t shrink or grow when the temperature in your shop swings. They just stay put. If you need the absolute maximum rigidity, go for a thicker wall. Just keep in mind it’ll add a bit of weight—and a bit to your bill.
