
A Real-World Guide to Carbon Infrared Heat Lamps
Most people are used to standard quartz heaters with those thin tungsten wires. Carbon lamps are a different beast. Instead of a wire, we use a carbon filament. Why does that matter? Because it pushes heat into the medium-to-long wave spectrum. In plain English: the heat actually sinks into your materials instead of just warming up the air around them. It’s way more efficient. Getting the Power Right The wattage and voltage are what determine how “dense” the heat is. If you’re running a high-wattage tube at 230V or 400V, you’re packing a lot of thermal energy into a tiny space. It’s the fastest way to hit your target temperature. But here’s the catch: you have to be exact with your power supply. If you under-volt the tube, the carbon filament won’t even get hot enough to radiate properly. On the flip side, if you over-volt it? You’ll fry the filament in a matter of hours. Not a good look. The Build and the Fittings We wrap the carbon element in high-purity quartz glass. We do this so the tube can expand and contract as it heats up without just snapping. Depending on your setup, you’ll probably want R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re the easiest for quick swaps when you’re doing maintenance. You might see some tubes with a special coating. These are great for blocking chemical vapors or shifting the wavelength, but keep in mind they take a bit longer to warm up than the clear ones. Putting Them to Work You’ll see these lamps everywhere—PET blowing, curing paint, welding plastics. Because they react so quickly, you can flick the heat on and off in rapid cycles to keep your temperatures exactly where they need to be. A couple of pro tips for the install: First, keep your reflectors polished. A dirty reflector is basically a heat-sink; it kills your efficiency. And please, check your cooling fans. High-density carbon tubes get incredibly hot right at the seals. If your fans aren’t up to the task, you’re going to melt your socket housing. And nobody wants to deal with that.
