
Stop the Cracks: Getting Brake Lining Curing Right
Curing brake linings is a bit of a balancing act. If you crank the heat too fast, you run into a nasty problem: the outside hardens into a shell while the inside is still wet. That trapped moisture creates pressure, and before you know it, you’ve got pores and thermal cracks ruining your batch. It’s frustrating. And expensive. To fix this, we use precision quartz infrared (IR) heaters. The goal is simple: control how deep the heat actually goes. Why IR beats the old ovens Traditional ovens use convection, which is honestly just slow and uneven. It’s like trying to thaw a steak by leaving it on the counter. Our quartz lamps are different. They send short-wave IR radiation straight into the material. By tweaking the wattage or moving the lamp a bit closer or further away, you control the energy. This stops that “skinning” effect where the surface over-cures and traps gases inside. No trapped gas, no bubbles. Getting the timing right If you want to stop the cracking, your heat ramp-up needs to move at the same pace as the resin’s chemical reaction. Quartz tubes are great here because they switch on and off instantly and dim precisely. We usually suggest pairing them with a closed-loop PID controller. Why? Because if your temperature spikes, the material shrinks unevenly and just… snaps. Steady, modulated heat is the secret. It lets the lining get strong without leaving any hollow voids inside. The trade-offs (because there’s always a catch) High-wattage lamps are fantastic for fast cycle times. You get the heat density you need to move parts through the line quickly. But here’s the thing: the more power you use, the more “picky” the process becomes. If your brake pads are shifted by even a few millimeters, you’ll get hot spots. You can’t wing it. Your jigs have to be rock-solid and your lamp alignment has to be spot-on. Also, a quick heads-up: we build these heaters to survive a rough industrial shop, but quartz glass is still glass. It’s fragile. Keep the heavy vibrations away from the lamps so they don’t burn out early. Get the specs right, and you’ll stop worrying about porosity and start shipping linings that are actually solid.
