Getting Your Head Around Carbon Fiber IR Heat Tubes
If you’ve ever used standard metal coil heaters, you know they can be a bit sluggish. Carbon fiber IR lamps are a different beast. We take a carbon filament, wrap it in quartz glass, and you get this concentrated blast of infrared radiation. The real magic here is how they react to power. Because carbon doesn’t expand much when it gets hot and it’s great at emitting heat, these things light up almost instantly. No waiting around. Talking Power and Voltage Here’s the thing about the specs: we balance voltage and wattage to control exactly how much heat is hitting your product. If you need something to hit temperature in a matter of seconds, you want a high-wattage tube. It creates a much tighter, more intense heat density. But you have to be careful. Your power supply needs to be a perfect match. If the voltage is off, it’s a coin toss—either the filament won’t even glow, or you’ll blow the tube the second you flip the switch. The Build and the “Danger Zone” The quartz glass isn’t just there for looks; it keeps the carbon from oxidizing and burning out. Sometimes we add special coatings to the glass so the heat can soak deeper into whatever you’re heating up. As for the plugs, we stick to the basics like R7s or Sk15. It makes it easy to just swap a tube into your existing oven without a headache. But a word of warning: the connection point is where things usually go wrong. If you don’t seat that connector firmly, you’ll get an electrical arc. That’s a quick way to crack your quartz and ruin your day. Putting Them to Work You’ll see these all over the place in PET bottle blowing or plastic curing. When you’ve got a conveyor belt moving fast, you can’t afford a slow heater. Just keep an eye on your surroundings. Since these tubes put out so much heat, your cooling system needs to be up to the task. If you run them at full tilt without enough airflow, you’re going to warp your reflector plates. My best advice? Pair them with a PID controller. It keeps your temperature window stable and takes the guesswork out of the process.
