
Getting the IR Wavelength Right for Brake Pad Curing
Here is the reality: brake pads aren’t all the same. A ceramic pad and a semi-metallic one react to infrared (IR) heat in completely different ways. If you just throw a generic IR lamp at both, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll likely end up with surfaces that are burnt to a crisp while the inside is still raw. That’s why we focus on matching the emitter wavelength to the specific material you’re actually using.
Why the material matters
Take semi-metallic pads. They’re packed with steel fibers and metallic shards. The problem? Those materials love to bounce long-wave IR right back. To actually get the heat into the core, we go with short-wave IR emitters. It digs deeper into that metallic mix. Without it, you get the “skin effect”—where the outside looks done, but the center is basically uncooked. Ceramic pads are a different story. They soak up medium-to-long wave IR much more easily. If you hit them with an ultra-high-intensity short-wave lamp, you risk thermal shock. You’ll end up with tiny micro-cracks in the bonding agent, and that’s a nightmare for quality control. We tune the lamp’s output to hit the ceramic’s “sweet spot” for absorption.
Picking your emitter
We aren’t big on “one size fits all” here. If you’re running a high-speed line and need to ramp up heat fast, we usually suggest halogen-filled quartz tubes. But if your process needs a slow, precise soak, we look at coated emitters to shift the wavelength. And keep an eye on your power density. Sure, cranking up the wattage cuts your cycle times. It feels great until your reflectors start to fail. Plus, if you push the wattage without beefing up your cooling fans, you’re just going to burn out the lamp ends way too soon.
The tricky part: Integration
Matching the wavelength is a huge win, but it’s only half the battle. You’ve also got to think about how the lamp actually sits over the part. If you leave a tiny gap, you get a lot of heat flux—which sounds great—but you have zero room for error. One slight misalignment and you’ve got a problem. We usually recommend a bit more breathing room to avoid those annoying hot spots. Just keep in mind: if you change your pad formula, you’ll probably need to tweak your lamp wattage to keep your cure rate where it needs to be.
