
Why Your Brake Pads Squeal (and How to Actually Fix It)
Ever wonder why some brake pads just won’t stop screaming? Most of the time, it comes down to how they were dried. If you’re using old-school convection ovens, you’ve got a problem. The hot air hits the outside of the pad first, baking the surface into a hard “skin.” This traps all the moisture and solvents deep inside. It’s like baking a cake that’s burnt on the top but raw in the middle. That internal stress leads to vibration, and that vibration is exactly what you hear as that annoying high-pitched squeal. Heating from the inside out This is where short-wave infrared (IR) comes in. Instead of blowing hot air around, IR radiation dives straight into the material. It shakes up the molecules throughout the entire thickness of the pad all at once. The core gets hot at the same time as the surface. No skin, no trapped moisture, and no weird density gaps. You just get a solid, uniform piece of material that actually behaves the way it should. Getting the balance right Now, you can’t just crank the heat and hope for the best. If you blast it, you’ll scorch the surface. We spend a lot of time dialing in the wavelength and the distance of the emitters. It’s all about that sweet spot. When the temperature gradient is just right, the resins cure perfectly. That’s how you kill the “judder” and stop the noise before the pads even leave the factory. The trade-offs (because nothing is magic) The speed is the best part. You go from waiting hours for an oven to finish to just a few minutes under an IR array. It’s fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. Because the energy is so concentrated, your conveyor speed has to be spot on. If the line crawls, you’ll over-cure the resin and end up with pads that are too brittle. Also, remember that IR doesn’t move air. Since you’re still evaporating solvents, you’ll need a solid ventilation setup to pull those fumes out of the zone. At the end of the day, it’s simpler to just fix the curing process than to keep fighting rejects. Stop treating the surface and start heating the whole pad.
