
Getting Your IR Heating Walls Right (No Matter the Car Size)
When we’re building custom heating walls for paint booths, there’s one big headache: the gap. Depending on what’s rolling into the booth—a tiny compact or a massive SUV—the distance between the lamps and the car changes. If your lamps are just slapped on the wall in a straight line, you’re going to have problems. You’ll end up with a roof that’s baking and rocker panels that are still cold. Not a great look. Dealing with heat and spacing Here’s the thing about shortwave IR: it needs a direct line of sight. It doesn’t just “fill the room.” Because of that, we don’t space the lamps evenly. That’s a rookie mistake. Instead, we pack them closer together in the areas where the car’s body curves away from the wall. But you can’t just keep adding lamps. You have to watch your wattage per meter. High-density clusters are great for getting through thick primers, but they’ll eat your electricity for breakfast. We build these walls to handle those spikes so you aren’t constantly running to the electrical panel to flip a tripped breaker. The bones of the build The frame has to be rock solid. If the wall sags even a little, your focal point shifts and your cure is ruined. Simple as that. We use perforated reflectors or expanded metal to catch the heat that would normally go to waste and bounce it right back onto the vehicle. One thing to watch out for: these arrays put out a ton of ambient heat. If your ventilation can’t keep up with the kilowatts, the air in the booth gets too hot, too fast. That’s when you get “solvent pop”—where the paint skins over and traps the solvents underneath. It’s a nightmare to fix. Making it flexible Cars change. Your production mix changes. You might be doing coupes today and delivery vans tomorrow. That’s why we use adjustable mounting brackets. Instead of ripping out the wiring and starting over every time you change your workflow, you just shift the lamp arrays up or down. It’s a quick mechanical tweak that saves you a massive amount of time and money.
